Because we don’t want to write “helium with 2 protons and 2 neutrons and 2 electrons” every time we’re discussing helium atoms but we still want to describe it in detail, we will be using symbols.
48. Use the “Symbol” part of the simulation to figure out what the following parts of the symbol mean:
Note: It seems a bit weird to use A, Z and Q in stead of A, B and C but because these are thing your can measure, these are quantities! A, Z and Q are simply the correct symbols for those quantities. The captital letter Q can also be written as the lower case letter q.
Another common way to describe a certain atom is its element with the mass number. The ion in the example would be called Helium-3. If this ion would have 2 protons and 2 neutrons in the nucleus, it would be called Helium-4.
