Almost nobody would claim that using radioisotopes in medicine should be banned; From diagnosis to treatment, an inordinate amount of people have been helped with nuclear technology and by now, we hope you won’t just see nuclear technology as something that is dangerous and scary.
Nuclear power however is a controversion issue.
After the second world war (and the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki), nuclear power plants were heralded as a peacefull application of a devastating technology. It was to be the energy source of the future; no CO2 emission (which remains an argument to ths day) and the energy-density is vast. One kilogram of uranium-235 will provide the same amount of energy as five million kilograms of coal. The major drawback of course is the nuclear waste, depending on the isotopes, something that might remain dangerous for decades to millennia.
Because you will get to decide in these matters as either a voter or a politician, we prefer that you’re able to form your own opinion. Of you were to listen to the owners en proponents of nuclear power plants, you’d think there’s no problem at all. If you were to listen to the environmental activitst, you’d think that each power plant is able to exterminate all life on earth. The truth, as always, lies somewhere in between.
To give you a general idea, we’ll start on how nuclear power plants works, which reactions take place and how that is used to generate electrical power. The NT and NG student will take a closer look at another technology in development, nuclear fusion. The E&M student will take a look at different ways in which a company can calculate wheter they should invest in a project like solar panels and the E&M students will get to do a stakeholder-analysis.
